Goals > Resolutions

It's the beginning of the year so you know what that means: New Year's resolutions.

Every year, millions of people step into the new year with a renewed focus and commitment on self-improvement. Unfortunately, 80 percent of people fail to keep their New Year's resolutions, according to a study by Scranton University.

And you know what that leads to? Disappointment.

Don't do that to yourself. Instead, set specific and measurable goals with these tips from Action for Happiness.

Figure out what you want to do or work on

Take some time to seriously think about what you want to achieve. It can be big or small, just make sure it's meaningful to you. But don't overwhelm yourself.

Break it down

Think about the small steps you need to take to reach your larger goal. You'll feel a sense of pride by doing the small things, which will help you along the journey.

Put it in writing

There's something about seeing an idea in writing that makes it stick. This is your chance to manifest what you want to achieve. Imagine what this goal will look like and how you'll feel once you knock it out of the box.

Give yourself a deadline

Once you've written out the specifics, put a realistic timestamp on it.

Find an accountability partner

Now's the time to phone a friend and tell them about the awesome goal you set. A good friend will remind you to "remember who you are" and stick with it. And if you feel yourself slippin', you know who to call.

Rip the band-aid off

The first step can be the scariest, but you got this! Don't let fear immobilize you. Instead, use it to chase after your wildest dreams.

And once you reach that goal, stand back and admire all of your hard work.

Girl, you did that!
